Wing, left
Martyrdom of an unidentified saint (possibly saint Colman); saint strangled by an executioner; fashionable dress.
Wing, right
Saint Catherine of Alexandria is beheaded; emperor Maxentius; wheel; sword; crown.

Longhurst 1929: 19th century, in the style of German, 16th century.
Williamson and Davies 2014: German, probably middle of the 19th century.

Hinges
Long hinge.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding: hair, haloes, hats, feathers, rope, flowers.

Reverse
Flat and smooth. Long vertical gash on the back of the right wing. Label with Salting Bequest number.

Object Condition
Long gash to back of the right panel. Left leaf stained from hinge plate rust.

Comments
The beheading of saint Catherine is inspired by Dürer's woodcut of the same sujectm c, 1496-1497 (Williamson and Davies 2014).

Collection of Edmond Bonnafé (d. 1903): his sale, Hotel Drouot, Paris, 5 May 1897, lot 249; collection of George Salting, London: his bequest to the museum in 1910.
