Ivory

Height: 197mm

Seated Virgin and Child; Christ in long robe; Christ standing on the Virgin's left knee; Christ holding a bird in his left hand; Christ making a blessing gesture with his right hand; belt; bench.

Museum's opinion 2011: Paris, circa 1350-1375.


Attribution
Style of Kremsmünster Master (Museum's opinion)

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of polychromy and gilding: gold (hair), black (shoes of the Virgin); green (ground; belt; lining of the Virgin's garment).

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Missing: head of Christ; right forearm of the Virgin; upper part of the Virgin's head.
The bottom is flat with crosshatching and pierced with hole.
Some cracks.

Comments
The Virgin's head is uncarved on top for a (now missing) crown.

Collection of Mrs Drey. Collection of Prince Archbishop of Seckau. Sotheby's, London, 4 December 1956, lot 130. Collection of Marthe and Ernst Kofler-Truniger: bought at their sale, Sotheby's, London, 13 December 1979, lot 26, by the British Museum.
