Hinges
Traces of four (?) missing hinges on either side. These were presumably ring hinges.
Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of polychromy and gilding: red (veil of the Virgin; architectural details), gold (decorated background; hair, wings), green (candlesticks, haloes)
Reverse
Smooth; slightly curved. Chamfered gable. Modern ink inscriptions, 'W. M' (for William Maskell) and '150'.
Object Condition
Restored crack in the upper part of the panel.
Pierced by 4 holes on either side probably where the hinges once were (ring hinges?). Modern central hole in the upper part of the panel (for hanging).
Provenance
Collection of William Maskell (b. 1814, d. 1890): bought from him by the British Museum in 1856.
