Reverse
Curved and smooth. Affixed paper label (sale catalogue entry): 'A convex plaque, carved with a scene from Valentine and Orson- 4 1/2 inches high, 5 inches wide- Italian, 15th century'. Modern ink inscriptions: '1831' and 'Florence 1/10/88' (on the side of the ivory).

Object Condition
Possibly a fragment of a larger piece.

Comments
Possibly a fragment of a circular box. Dalton suggested this could be a scene from the story of Valentine and Orson (Dalton 1909).

Provenance
Acquired in Italy (Florence?). Collection of Edwin A. Johnson; bought from him by the British Museum in 1921.
