Height: 143mm

Seated Virgin and Child (Virgo lactans); Christ standing on the Virgin's left knee; bare-chested Christ; Christ holding a fruit in his left hand; belt.

Dalton 1909: French, 14th century.
Koechlin 1924: French, 2nd half of 14th century.
Museum's opinion 2011: French, 14th century.

Unknown

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive polychromy and gilding, especially on the belt and child's tunic (modern).

Reverse
Carved in the round. Modern ink inscription: 'xλWε/' (possibly for the William Maskell collection).

Object Condition
Missing: crown.
Left forearm of Christ restored. Chip on the Virgin's forehead.

Comments
Dalton (1909) believes that the, now missing, crown to have been medieval.

Provenance
Collection of William Maskell (b. 1814, d. 1890); bought from him by the British Museum in 1856.
