Couple playing chess; courting couple; man with his left hand around the pole supporting the tent; lady holding one or two chess pieces in her left hand.
Corner terminals: four crouching monsters.

Museum's opinion 2012: France, beginning of the 14th century.

Reverse
Back turned with a depression for (missing) mirror.

Object Condition
Six later drill holes; cracked.
Missing: head of the lower right corner terminal.

Provenance
Major Astor collection, at Hever Castle (Kent): his sale, Sotheby's, London, 6 May 1983, lot 228; acquired in 1983 thanks to Toto-Lotto-Mitteln.
