Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy and gilding.

Reverse
Carved in the round. Recess in the lower part to accommodate the missing bench. Back of the recessed part flat and smooth.

Object Condition
Missing: bench on which both figures were seated (made of a different piece of ivory?); finger on the right hand of the left hand side apostle.
The upper part of both figures (heads and shoulders) broke off and was glued back into place.
Several cracks. Discolouration.
Deep hole at the top of the heads of both figures, possibly to secure haloes.
Hole and scoring on the underside.

Provenance
Transferred from the Gosudarstvennii Muzeinii Fond (GMF - State Museum Collection) to the Hermitage in 1938.
