Pietà (Lamentation of the Virgin over Christ's body); Virgin in prayer; saint John the Evangelist; saint Mary Magdalene holding an ointment pot (mortar and pestle?).

Koechlin 1924: France, 2nd half of 15th century.
Museum's opinion 2012: France or Rhineland (?), beginning of 16th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of a later monochrome coloration.

Reverse
Carved in the round. Appearance of a scallop shell on the back.

Object Condition
Shell broken on the upper right side, left side (near saint John's shoulder) and chipped along the lower edge.
Two holes in the upper part of the shell (one plugged).

Provenance
Bard collection, Versailles; Leopold Stern Collection, Munich; Collection of Albert Figdor, Vienna; bought by the Museum on 15 August 1935.
