Limerick, The Hunt Museum

Ivory

Height: 168 mm
Width: 97 mm
Depth: 9 mm

Register 1: Expulsion from the Garden of Eden; Adam and Eve covering their nakedness; angel; sword; trees; architecture.
Register 2: Adam and Eve forced to labour; spade; Eve suffering the pains of childbirth; standing figure (doctor?) holding a vial (?); bench decorated with crosshatching.

Museum's opinion 2011: France, 14th century.

Hinges
The hinges side is broken, so the traces of the missing hinges have vanished.

Reverse
Flat and smooth.

Object Condition
Missing: the right side of the ivory; Eve's head in the lower register scene (the slightly curved section of ivory behind the figure of Eve is a later repair); lower left corner (repaired).

Provenance
Collection of John Hunt (b. 1900, d. 1976) and Gertrude Hunt (b. 1903, d. 1975), Limerick; now part of the Hunt Museum which opened in 1997.
