Ivory;metal (remains of hinges)

Height: 64 mm
Width: 48 mm

Crucifixion; Virgin supported by Holy Women; Virgin in prayer; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers holding scrolls.
Incised trefoils in the spandrels.

Williamson and Davies 2014: French or Mosan (?), 1350-1400.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Faint traces of polychromy and/or gilding.

Reverse
Flat and smooth. Traces of two inscriptions: '491...' (probably Museum inscription); '80 / 1666 / St[?]' (probably a code used by Mrs Hearn).

Object Condition
Hole in each corner, each hole is filled with a pin.
Hole in the outer edge for a clasp now lost.
Yjree more holes on the underside which have caused cracks.

Provenance
Collection of Mrs A. W. Hearn, Menton (likely to have been bought from Sutton in 1914-1916; see Williamson and Davies 2014): given by her to the museum in 1923.
