Ivory

Saint Catherine of Alexandria with wheel and martyr's palm; saint John the Baptist wearing a camel hide; seated Virgin and Child; Christ with a long robe standing in the Virgin's lap; unidentified bearded male saint (possibly saint Peter); unidentified crowned female saint holding a cross.

Museum's opinion 2011: Italy (Siena), 2nd quarter of the 14th century.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the right side (?).

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: Saint John the Baptist's robe (brown); decoration of the gables and arches (blue).

Reverse
Flat and smooth. Labels with inscriptions: 'COLLECTION DU DR P. THOBY NANTES VI'; 'EXPOSITION D'ART ANCIEN 1924, 225, 95'; 'EXPOSITION D'ART RELIGIEUX 1933, LA PSALLETTE DE NANTES, 312', 'Dobrée, 969-7-35,' '28', 'FX'.

Object Condition
Central hole at the upper part of the fragment. Two holes in the left corners.

Provenance
Collection of Maurice Gautier (lot 3822?). Collection of Mr. Coyaud; collection of Dr. Paul Thoby (no. VI; bought from Coyaud on the 24 June 1925): his bequest to the museum in 1969.
