Virgin praying.

Gaborit-Chopin 2003 and Museum's opinion 2010: Italy (Pisa?), 3rd quarter of the 14th century. Style reminiscent of Nino Pisano (fl. 1345-1368), and perhaps made by a craftsman from his circle.

Attribution
Circle of Nino Pisano (Gaborit-Chopin)

Reverse
Modern hole for fixing.

Object Condition
Ivory cracked; crack on the Virgin's face.
Small stain under the right arm.
Missing: lower part of the relief.

Comments
The uneven base of the relief suggests that it is a fragment of a full-length figure, probably from a Crucifixion scene.

Provenance
Collection of Alexandre-Charles Sauvageot, Paris (no. 232); given by A.-C. Sauvageot to the Museum in 1856.
