Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of polychromy (green for the trees and grass; black for the Mouth of Hell and Peter's cave) and gilding (hair, haloes, beards, etc.).
Reverse
Carved on all sides.
Object Condition
Missing: part of the base moulding at the back (replaced with wood); two intarsia squares and five of bone, 40 squares and triangles of bone and wood on the bottom.
Provenance
Said to have been brought to the Convent of Carmel in Chartres at the request of the daughter of the marquis of Denonville, governor of Philip V of Spain, in 1701, and to have contained relics of saint Theresa. Collection of Thomas F. Flannery: sold, Flannery sale, Sotheby's, London, 1 December 1983, lot 62. Bought in 1984 by the Museum.
