Baptism of Christ by saint John the Baptist; angel holding Christ's tunic. Temptation of Christ; devil. Entry into Jerusalem; foal of the she-ass.

Christ before Caiaphas. Executioner; Flagellation. Crowning with thorns.Lid, right Prophet holding a scroll. Foliated decoration.

Christ before Pilate; Pilate washing his hands. Carrying of the Cross.

People of Jerusalem throwing their cloaks before Christ (part of the Entry into Jerusalem on the front of the lid). Last Supper with saint John the Evangelist leaning on Christ's breast; round table. Christ washing the feet of the apostles. Agony in the Garden (Christ at Gethsemane); apostles asleep. Betrayal (Taking of Christ; Kiss of Judas); Christ restores Malchus' ear, cut by saint Peter.

Unknown

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of polychromy (green for the trees and grass; black for the Mouth of Hell and Peter's cave) and gilding (hair, haloes, beards, etc.).

Reverse
Carved on all sides.

Object Condition
Missing: part of the base moulding at the back (replaced with wood); two intarsia squares and five of bone, 40 squares and triangles of bone and wood on the bottom.

Provenance
Said to have been brought to the Convent of Carmel in Chartres at the request of the daughter of the marquis of Denonville, governor of Philip V of Spain, in 1701, and to have contained relics of saint Theresa. Collection of Thomas F. Flannery: sold, Flannery sale, Sotheby's, London, 1 December 1983, lot 62. Bought in 1984 by the Museum.
