Object Condition
Almost completely destroyed: two fragments have survived, a large fragment of the Virgin figure, and part of the ass's head.

Provenance
Collection of Hermann Sax, Vienna: Sax sale, Vienna, Miethke, 4 December 1893, lot 113, with ill. Heckscher collection: sold, 1898, lot 187. Figdor collection, Vienna; acquired by the Museum in 1935; undocumented after 7 April 1945; one large fragment (of the Virgin figure) was returned by the Soviet Union to the Museum in 1958, another fragment (of the ass's head) was brought to Wiesbaden in 1946 and, in 1958 to Berlin-Dahlem.
