Width: 114mm
Depth: 17mm (volute) and 42mm (knop)

Side 1: Crucifixion with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist.
Side 2: Standing Virgin and Child (Vierge Glorieuse); two standing angels holding candlesticks.
Snake with human bust.
Foliated decoration: vine leaves.

Molinier 1890: French, 14th century.
Museum's opinion 2009: French, c. 1340-1350.

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Missing: head of the snake.
The base of the volute on the Virgin side is damaged.

Collection of Frédéric Spitzer, Paris: his sale, Chevallier and Mannheim, Paris, 17 April 1893, lot 126. Collection of Sir Julius Wernher (d. 1912), Bath House, London; on loan to English Heritage and displayed at Ranger's House since 2002.
