Carved in lower relief on the back. The back of the bench is hollow, possibly to accommodate a relic.
Object Condition
Very cracked.
Missing: head of the Virgin; head of Christ (both later replacements).
Comments
The broken head of the Virgin has been given a different museum number (Inv. MG 017), as well as the head of Christ (Inv. MG 016).
Provenance
Collection of John Pierpont Morgan (d. 1913), New York; sold to French and Company, New York, in 1951. Collection of Thomas J. Flannery, Jr, Wilmette (Illinois), purchased in New York a few years prior to 1959; collection of John Hunt (b. 1900, d. 1976) and Gertrude Hunt (b. 1903, d. 1975), Limerick (by 1959); now part of the Hunt Museum which opened in 1997.
